Common Issues with UME Embroidery Machines & How to Troubleshoot Them - Murthy Sewing Machines (1)

Every embroidery machine is different, and UME machines are no different. When you have technical problems, finishing things like shop branding patches, school uniform logos, or blouse embroidery can take longer. But that doesn’t mean that every little mistake needs a technician. You can fix many problems at your desk if you know what to look for.

Needle Breakage Occurs Frequently

Needle breaking is the most prevalent problem with UME embroidery machines. The needle usually breaks when you use the wrong size, have too tight a fabric tension, or hoop it incorrectly. When sewing thick fabrics like denim, wedding silk, or layered textiles, it helps to use a stronger needle, like the DBx7 or titanium-coated varieties. Also, check for bent needles or needle bars not lined up correctly. Changing a worn-out needle as soon as it starts to wobble will help you avoid more difficulties.

Mid-Design Thread Keeps Breaking

If you stop and start your thread too often, it could mess up the alignment of your stitches and stop your creation in the middle. First, check that the thread spool is not knotted and is smooth. Old spools or low-quality threads are more likely to break under stress. Look at the upper tension disc and the bobbin case, too. Dust or lint buildup makes the thread move unevenly. Use a dry brush to clean the tension discs and remove fluff in the bobbin race. If the breaking keeps happening, turn the upper tension dial down. A quarter turn can significantly affect the UME’s sensitive tension system.

Not Stitching in the Correct Place in the Design

If the design looks odd or starts to stitch off-center, you may have a hooping or sensor problem. Always check that your hoop is secured and centred properly. Before you begin a complete design, use the UME 801’s manual calibration settings to check the positioning of the stitches. After each job, you can also check that the machine’s head is moving back to its home position. If not, use the reset option to move it back to its initial position and then upload a new design.

If you miss stitches, you could damage the whole clothing structure especially if it’s a complicated design like a border. Reduce the stitch speed to pull when working with soft fabrics like chiffon or Lycra. Try using a stabiliser below and reduce the stitch rate to 500 and 600 SPM. Before you make your order again, repeat the bobbin thread and try it out on some scrap material to make sure the stitches works consistently.

Bobbin Thread Appearing at the Top

This problem is caused by the top thread or bobbin tension not being right. When the lower thread starts to pop on the top side, it ruins the needlework look. To fix it, you need to rethread the top and bottom threads all the way through. Try sewing a little circle as a tension test to see if the threads are balanced. If the top thread seems too slack, change the tension a little. If the bobbin is too tightly wrapped, unwind and fill it up again.

Machine Error Beeps and Stops in the Middle

When the UME embroidery machine stops, it may make a sound but not show any signs of a problem. This usually happens when a machine gets stuck or a sensor reads incorrectly. First, turn off the machine and move it to see anything got stucked. Next, check the carriage rail and clean it. Sometimes, little lint can build up and stop the machine from moving. If the mistake keeps happening, reset the pattern, pick a new starting point, and start over from the last stitch that worked.

The Touch Panel Is Not Working

Production may have to stop if the control panel or display stops working. A drop in power or a program freeze often causes this. Shut down the computer, wait a minute, and then turn it back on. If the touchscreen still doesn’t function, try restarting the computer after connecting it to a UPS or stabiliser. Don’t push too many buttons at once. Instead, wait for each command to finish before going on to the next.

USB Is Not Detecting the Design File

The USB ports on UME PCs may be unable to read DST files or pen drives. First, ensure that the file is saved in the root folder of the USB device and not in any other location. Some UME workstations might not be able to handle larger storage devices, so utilise regular 8GB or 16GB pen drives. Reformatting the USB in FAT32 format often fixes this problem. Also, keep file names short and use letters or numbers. Don’t use symbols.

The Stitch Quality Is Varying

When the same design looks different on several pieces, the thread tension changes or some parts are worn out. Check to see if the presser foot or needle bar is loose. Check the course of the thread as well. Even a slight change can cause stitch pulls. Run the same design on test cloth after each maintenance step to see whether the output improves. You can keep everything running smoothly by putting a little sewing oil on moving parts once a week.

Over vibration can make the whole pattern move, loosen stitches, or shake the hoop. Make sure the machine is on a flat, firm surface. Vibration is often caused by uneven speed settings or screws that are too loose under the embroidery arm. If the design has quite dense patterns, slow down and tighten any junctions that are easy to see. Put anti-vibration mats under the machine table to reduce noise and shaking.

Do Power Outages Ruin Midway Embroidery?

People who live in places where the power cuts a lot have to stop working on their embroidered projects. UME machines don’t usually start up again on their own if you haven’t saved the stitch position. You should get into the habit of noting down how many stitches you make every ten minutes. If the power cuts, you can pick up the design where it left off at that stitch point. A UPS system can also help protect things from shutting down without warning.

If the machine jams for no reason, look inside the bobbin case to see whether the thread is knotted. After you clean the case and remove the bobbin, gently put it back in. Always use the correct size bobbins. Bobbins that are too big or not even make it more likely that the thread will bunch up. If the jam continues, thoroughly clean the feed dog area or change the bobbin spring.
